That’s me, Laura Billingham, on the day of my wedding back in May 1995. The person behind the lens was John Dolan, one of my mentors and a prominent figure in the “new school” of wedding photography that Martha Stewart and others have championed for decades now. If the photo looks familiar, that might be because it appears in Martha’s second book on weddings.
There are two reasons why I love this photo. First, because it really captures how I felt that day. And second, it’s a timeless image. If I had not told you when it was taken, would you have been able to pick the year? I liked John’s style of photography so much, I ended up working for him in New York City before moving back to the Bucks County/Hunterdon area in 1999.
My love and interest in photography began well before all of this, however. I started taking pictures in high school and was even selected to attend the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts for photography — returning to be a counselor a few years later.
After graduating from Connecticut College, I moved to Manhattan and held interesting positions at MoMA and the Guggenheim before dedicated myself to photography full time. I shot my first wedding in 1998.
While I used to shoot only film, I have incorporated digital equipment into the mix since about 2005.
